Ciò che stiamo cominciando a capire è che quando abbiamo raggiunto la piena comprensione di un’opera finita, quando abbiamo spogliato il dipinto da tutto il contesto mondano relativo all’attualità e arriviamo a osservare la carne disadorna del suo corpo – solamente pittura su tela –, ciò che vediamo emanare dal suo corpo è luce smaterializzata. Il materiale rivela l’immateriale e il grande paradosso della nostra modernità è la nostra aspettativa che debba essere qualcosa di diverso da ciò che è.

What we are beginning to realize is that when we have achieved the full realization of an actualized painting, when we have stripped away all the worldly decor of the day, and come to look upon the unadorned flesh of its body – just paint on canvas – what we see emanating from its body is dematerialized light. The material reveals the imma- terial, and the great paradox of our modernity is our expectation that it should be something other than what it is.
